Qualifications of an ideal Cook:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • CPR Certified
  • At least 1 year of related work experience

Cook Job Summary:

The Cook is responsible for preparing and plating meals in a timely fashion according to menus and recipes approved by 

the Executive Chef and in accordance with current Federal, State, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. 

Essential Functions:

The following essential functions are normal for this position. This list is not to be construed as 

exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

General Duties

• Support the mission, vision, and goals of the organization, upholding and promoting company culture and vision.

• Assist in planning menus. 

• Prepare or direct preparation of meals following planned menus and standardized recipes and in compliance with 

all applicable food preparation regulations and guidelines. Apportion Food for serving. Maintain high standards 

of quality food production, nutrition, and portion control. Prepare a sufficient quantity of food to meet 

requirements, ensure served at the proper temperature, and maintain an attractive appearance and appealing taste.

• Maintain proper sanitation and safety in food preparation and storage areas.

• Assist Prep Cook in ensuring the availability of supplies and food or approved substitutions in adequate time for 

preparation.

• Responsible for hot food preparation, including accompaniments and garnishes. Prepares hot entrees, soups, and 

vegetables following preparation sheets and provides recipes for dining.

• Assist in cleaning of cooking area and other kitchen equipment and facilities. 

• Consult with the Executive Chef/sous chef and/or Dietitian on issues of menu planning, care planning, food 

preparation, therapeutic diets, kitchen equipment maintenance, etc.

• Supervise the kitchen in the absence of the Sous Chef and Executive Chef.

• Preparation of food in advance, as indicated.

• Complete food temperature logs 

• Obtain and demonstrate knowledge of the Discover Your Spark Lifestyle and Wellness philosophy and its inherent 

core values. 

• Support and participate in Discover Your Spark (e.g., assist with feedback groups, assist in new initiatives, 

encourage Residents, and act as champions of fun).

Safety and Sanitation:

• Understand and follow safety and infection control policies and procedures. 

• Follow established procedures in the use and disposal of personal protective equipment.

• Wear and/or use safety equipment and supplies (e.g., gait belt, back brace, mechanical lifts, etc.) when lifting or 

moving residents, as applicable to your position. 

• Keep floors dry. Report spills immediately.

• Report all hazardous conditions and equipment problems to the supervisor
